Cebu City officials are reminding residents not to store gasoline or other flammable liquids inside their homes, citing serious fire hazards in residential areas.
The warning follows a resolution authored by Councilor Dave Tumulak and recently approved by the Cebu City Council.
The measure urges all residents to refrain from hoarding gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum products, particularly in residential areas where improper storage could trigger fires or explosions.
The resolution cites Republic Act No. 9514, or the Revised Fire Code of the Philippines, which sets national standards for fire prevention and safety.
Under the law and its implementing rules, flammable liquids such as gasoline and diesel must only be stored in approved containers and locations designed to minimize fire hazards.
Tumulak said storing large amounts of fuel at home, especially in unsafe containers, increases the risk of fire incidents that could endanger lives and damage property.
The resolution noted that recent increases in fuel prices have prompted some individuals to store gasoline and other fuels in anticipation of further price hikes.
However, the council warned that keeping fuel in unauthorized containers, such as plastic bottles or improvised receptacles commonly called “bote-bote,” significantly raises the risk of accidental ignition, especially in densely populated neighborhoods.
Beyond urging residents to avoid hoarding fuel, the Cebu City Council also called on the Department of Energy (DOE) to monitor gasoline stations and remain alert to risks linked to fuel stockpiling.
The resolution directs the secretary of the Sangguniang Panlungsod to provide copies of the measure to the Office of the Mayor, the Bureau of Fire Protection, and all barangays in Cebu City to help spread awareness about fire safety regulations.
Tumulak emphasized that public awareness and strict compliance with fire safety laws are key to preventing avoidable fire incidents and protecting communities across Cebu City. (LLP)
