The 66 families from Lapu-Lapu City who were temporarily relocated to a resort in Cordova ahead of the 2026 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit have returned to their homes near the Mactan Expo, one of the main venues of the ASEAN Leaders’ Summit held on May 7 and 8.
The families stayed at a resort in Cordova starting April 27 as part of security preparations for the international event.
They returned to their community on Saturday, May 9.
Edgar Forrosuelo, president of the Lampara Urban Poor Association, said the relocation was smooth and that residents understood the reason for the move.
“Ni cooperate gyud mi kay kahibaw mi nga importante nga mahawa mi kay naa man gyud mi sa area gud,” he said.
He said their community sits within the security perimeter of the Mactan Expo, located about 200 meters from their homes.
Forrosuelo also said the residents were properly supported during their stay, including food and activities such as skills training.
“Ang among panginahanglan na provide gyud nila, wala gyuy problema,” he said.
“Nalipay pod mi sa situation nga naingon ato, wala mi pasagdi sa administrasyon,” he added.
Resident Babylyn Montenegro said they also attended seminars, including fire prevention training, during the relocation period.
She described their stay as a positive experience, especially for children who were able to use the resort facilities.
“Nakapahuway gyud mi didto,” Montenegro said.
She added that meals were served regularly during their stay.
“Natinga bitaw ko ang kaon alas 11 naa na, diri makakaon na mi baya mga hapit na alas 12,” she said.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan earlier said the temporary relocation complied with a directive from the National Organizing Council as part of ASEAN Summit security preparations.
She also said she visited the families during their stay, describing the arrangement as having a “family day” atmosphere. (VCL)
