Beach Day Takes Your Stress Away: How Visiting Coastal Landscapes Improve Your Health

Drowning with stress? Run to the beach to relax and dive your troubles out!

Slowing down, introspecting, and adventures — that’s what we usually do during beach days. With that, we tend to overlook how beaches cure us, pulling us back up to the shore, and we forget the health-related benefits we can get just for a day of dipping in the sea.

Visiting coastal landscapes actually has several advantages for our health. One benefit is that being at the beach encourages people to stay active. Being at coastal areas encourages people to exercise longer as they see time as ‘more expansive’ when they are at the coasts.

Beach days also reduce your stress, as you can experience attention restoration. Researchers define attention restoration as the process of mind relaxation once it recognizes being at a softer and calmer space. With attention restoration, you will be at ease and will enjoy your time peacefully at the beach.

Not only lessening stress and encouraging exercise, coastal landscapes may also reduce your pain. In one study, it was found that dental patients that viewed coastal scenes using a virtual reality headset felt less pain, suggesting that coastal landscapes help in relieving one’s perception of pain.

Beyond individual benefits, you can also benefit interpersonally. Spending time with friends and family at the beach strengthens your bond, fostering a stronger relationship and creating memories with the vast landscape of the sea which provides a sense of nostalgia when you return after a long time. 

The next time your troubles drown you, you know where to go — the beach! Beach days are for fun, for your physical health, for your mental well-being, and for you to spend quality time with your loved ones!
