A tooth extraction procedure led authorities to three Vietnamese nationals who were allegedly practicing dentistry without the required Philippine licenses and permits in Mandaue City.
The three were arrested by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) during an operation in Barangay Tipolo on Aug. 10 following a complaint from the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) Mandaue Chapter.
CIDG Chief Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II said operatives caught the suspects while they were performing a tooth extraction despite allegedly lacking the required Certificate of Registration, Professional Identification Card and special permit from the Professional Regulatory Board of Dentistry.
The suspects are set to face charges for alleged violation of Republic Act 9484, or the Philippine Dental Act of 2007.
Morico warned that allowing unlicensed individuals, including foreign nationals, to perform dental procedures could put patients at risk.
“Allowing an unlicensed individual—such as a foreign national to practice dentistry or perform dental procedures without a Certificate of Registration, license, or a Special Temporary Permit from a regulating body poses danger and health risks to the patients, and a total lack of legal accountability,” Morico said.
The operation was conducted after the PDA Mandaue Chapter reported the alleged illegal practice to authorities.
The CIDG said it remains committed to stopping unauthorized medical and dental practices to protect public health.
The agency also urged the public to ensure that medical and dental services are provided by properly licensed professionals.
