Former Cebu governor Gwendolyn Garcia is keeping her distance from early political maneuvering for the 2028 elections, saying her attention is better spent on programs that could benefit Cebuanos in the long term.
Garcia made the remarks amid questions about the 2028 gubernatorial race, including speculation that she could support Ako Bisaya Party-list Rep. Sonny Lagon and the possibility of her brother, former Cebu 3rd District Rep. Pablo John “PJ” Garcia, returning to the gubernatorial race.
Rather than commit to either prospect, Garcia pointed to the time remaining before the next provincial elections.
“Ang ako ba, layo pa kaayo. Pila paman, there’s so much that you’ll be wasting on intrigue,” Garcia said.
She said she would rather focus on projects that create opportunities for Cebuanos than on how her actions might affect a future political contest.
“It has always been my mantra, ‘buhat ang pasultion,’” she said.
Garcia also cautioned against making definitive political declarations this early.
“Wag tayong magsalita ng pinal,” she said.
She said her current priorities include education and livelihood, particularly programs that could provide opportunities to underserved Cebuanos.
Among these initiatives is the GFG Institute, which is being developed through a partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to offer two-year diploma courses.
Garcia said the program is intended to widen access to diploma-level education for residents who may have limited opportunities to pursue further training.
Asked about Lagon, Garcia did not say whether she would support his possible gubernatorial bid but expressed appreciation for his support.
“I have to be thankful to Sonny. He’s been very, very supportive,” she said, recalling that Lagon had lent her his helicopter for one of her trips to Ormoc.
Garcia also maintained that those who want to seek public office have the right to do so.
PJ Garcia has acknowledged that he is considering another run for governor, potentially placing him among the figures who could shape the province’s 2028 political lineup.
One Cebu, which Gwendolyn Garcia chairs, is also expected to play a role in discussions over the coalition’s possible candidates for the next elections.
For the former governor, however, the more important timeline extends well beyond 2028.
“I would rather spend my time, not thinking about 2028 but rather thinking about 2058,” she said.
