The Lapu-Lapu City Government is strengthening security and emergency preparedness in schools following recent active attack incidents in educational institutions across the country.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) met with the Department of Education (DepEd) Lapu-Lapu City Division, Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LCPO), City Traffic Management Services (CTMS), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and other concerned agencies to review existing safety measures and contingency plans.
The city is also preparing for the Nationwide Simultaneous School Safety Drill for Active Attack Incidents scheduled for Sept. 3, following a directive from the DepEd Central Office.
Five pilot schools have been selected for the initial implementation: Babag, Marigondon, Mactan, Pusok and Sta. Rosa. The pilot will cover both junior and senior high schools.
Before the drill, the participating schools will undergo a pre-orientation and tabletop exercise at the DepEd Division Office.
The activity will bring together school representatives, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), CDRRMO personnel, police, BFP, CTMS and other concerned agencies to review their respective roles and responses during an active attack incident.
Meanwhile, mandatory bag checking is being implemented in Lapu-Lapu City schools in line with existing DepEd policies.
Lapu-Lapu City Police Chief PCol. Agosto Daskeo assured the public that threats involving schools would be taken seriously and subjected to proper assessment and investigation.
He said the police would continue coordinating with concerned agencies to ensure appropriate intervention when necessary.
The city government said school safety should extend beyond drills, with continued coordination among schools, parents, law enforcement agencies and other government offices needed to strengthen prevention, preparedness and emergency response.
Among those who attended the coordination meeting were Secretary to the Mayor Atty. Misaellee Tejano, DILG representative Roger Baynosa, and representatives from the DepEd Lapu-Lapu City Division, CTMS, BFP-Lapu-Lapu City Fire District and PTA.
