International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane called the Hague based tribunal the “last bastion of the rule of law in the world” as she appealed for continued international support while facing US sanctions.
Akane made the remarks Sunday during an event organized by a nongovernmental organization in Tokyo, which she attended online.
She said support from people around the world is necessary for the ICC to continue its work and expressed gratitude for assistance from Japan, including a signature campaign in support of the court.
Akane also denounced the US sanctions imposed on her, calling them illegal and unacceptable. She said the measures amounted to an attempt to suppress justice through external force.
The sanctions have also affected her personal finances, Akane said. She has continued receiving her salary through a local bank but has encountered difficulties in remitting money. Companies have also rejected transactions involving her because of the sanctions.
Akane said the measures have affected her dignity and economic freedom, adding that she has been treated like a criminal.
Despite the pressure, Akane said she must remain undaunted as ICC officials continue their work even as some feel their lives are at risk.
The ICC prosecutes individuals accused of war crimes and other offenses under international law.
The US government imposed sanctions last month on Akane and a senior ICC trial lawyer, following Washington’s frustration over court decisions and investigations involving US troops.
