Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez was transferred to the New Quezon City Jail in Payatas on Monday night, Sept. 14, after doctors found him clinically stable and no longer in need of continued hospitalization.
A Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) convoy left the Pedro Gil exit of the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital shortly after 10 p.m., hours after the Sandiganbayan ordered his transfer.
Romualdez was committed to the Quezon City Jail-Male Dormitory at about 10:49 p.m. in compliance with the order of the Sandiganbayan Third Division.
The BJMP said intake procedures began immediately after his arrival, including a medical evaluation, fingerprinting, mugshot, interviews and orientation.
Romualdez was placed in the jail infirmary with other persons deprived of liberty who require medical monitoring because of his medical needs and the recommendations presented to the court.
The BJMP said the arrangement was made in accordance with its policies and the court’s directives to ensure that Romualdez’s continuing medical needs would be properly attended to.
The bureau also said it would implement its rules and regulations professionally and impartially, with all persons deprived of liberty treated fairly and humanely without distinction or privilege based on their status or position.
The transfer followed the UP-PGH doctors’ finding that Romualdez was clinically stable and did not require continued hospitalization.
Romualdez had been under hospital custody following his arrest on a Sandiganbayan warrant.
