Cordova is targeting the opening of a new municipal infirmary in the second quarter of 2027, with the Cebu Provincial Government providing P50 million to help fund the health facility’s infrastructure.
Mayor Cesar “Didoy” Suan, Municipal Health Officer Dr. Thirdy Louise A. Kong and representatives of the Department of Health (DOH) recently inspected the proposed site as the municipality prepares for construction and eventual operation.
Public Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan-Viscayno, who was tasked by Gov. Pamela Baricuatro to oversee the implementation of health reforms in the province, also joined the inspection.
Catalan-Viscayno said expanding healthcare access requires not only strengthening existing hospitals but also developing a network of facilities that can bring appropriate services closer to communities.
“From a public health perspective, this is important. Strengthening healthcare does not only mean improving our existing hospitals. It also means bringing appropriate care closer to where people live and building a stronger network of health facilities across Cebu,” she said.
The site inspection allowed provincial, municipal and health officials to review the infirmary’s plans and identify requirements that must be addressed before construction and operation.
The project is being coordinated with the DOH to ensure that the facility meets standards for healthcare service delivery.
Among the DOH officials who joined the inspection were Engr. Vincent Michael Bandola, licensing officer III, and Cheryl Pepito, development management officer IV.
Their participation covered the technical and regulatory requirements for the proposed infirmary, including compliance with standards for safe and accessible healthcare services.
Unlike hospitals operated by the provincial government, the proposed infirmary will be owned, funded and managed by the Cordova local government unit once it becomes operational.
The P50 million from the provincial government is intended to support the municipality in establishing the infrastructure needed for the facility, while Cordova will assume responsibility for its operation and management.
Catalan-Viscayno said the Capitol will continue assisting the municipality as the project moves forward.
“The provincial government said it would continue providing guidance, technical support and assistance to the Cordova LGU as the project progresses,” she said.
The infirmary is expected to provide Cordova residents and people from nearby communities with an additional healthcare facility, potentially reducing the need to travel farther for certain medical services.
Further site inspections and technical assessments are expected as the project advances, with the municipality working toward its target opening in the second quarter of 2027.
