Malacañang shortens government work hours Sept. 28 for Family Week

Government employees in the executive branch will have a shortened workday on Sept. 28 as Malacañang gives them time to celebrate National Family Week and Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day with their families.

Under Memorandum Circular No. 136 signed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto on Sept. 16, work in executive branch offices will be suspended starting 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28.

The shortened workday covers government agencies and instrumentalities under the Executive branch, including government owned or controlled corporations and state universities and colleges.

Agencies providing basic and health services, disaster and calamity preparedness and response, and other vital services are exempted and must continue their operations.

The memorandum also encouraged government workers to fully support programs and activities organized by the National Committee on the Filipino Family for the observance of the 34th National Family Week.

Malacañang likewise encouraged the legislative and judicial branches, independent commissions and bodies, and the private sector to consider suspending work to give Filipino families the opportunity to observe Family Week together.

The shortened work hours are based on Proclamation No. 60, issued in 1992, which declares the last week of September every year as Family Week, and Proclamation No. 326, issued in 2012, which designates the fourth Monday of September as Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day.

National Family Week seeks to strengthen and promote unity, solidarity and stability within Filipino families as the basic unit of society.

Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day, meanwhile, emphasizes the importance of families sharing meals as part of a national tradition.

The National Committee on the Filipino Family leads the observance of Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day. The committee is tasked with promoting the family as the foundation of the nation.
