Jokes about selling or trading kidneys for gadgets are drawing a warning from the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI), which said Wednesday that such social media content could mislead the public about organ trading.
The NKTI said the trend, which includes humorous posts and artificial intelligence-generated images, appears intended as jokes rather than encouragement to engage in unlawful acts.
However, the institute stressed that human organs should not be treated as commodities or used as forms of payment.
The NKTI also warned that even jokes about organ trading could be misunderstood, particularly by young people and other vulnerable audiences.
According to the institute, such content may contribute to misinformation and create the false impression that trading human organs for goods or other forms of payment is legal.
It said the trend could also trivialize the experiences of living organ donors, transplant recipients and patients waiting for transplants.
The NKTI urged the public to exercise greater sensitivity and responsibility when creating and sharing online content involving organ donation and transplantation.
It encouraged social media users to use digital platforms to promote accurate information while respecting the dignity of organ donors, recipients and patients awaiting transplants.
“Organ donation is a gift of life – not a means of payment,” the NKTI said.
