Cutting electricity use in government offices is only one part of Cebu’s response to its power supply concerns as the provincial government also works with energy stakeholders to support projects that could add generation capacity.
The Cebu Provincial Government has adopted immediate conservation measures while pursuing longer-term interventions involving national energy agencies, power companies and potential investors.
At the Capitol, Executive Order No. 47 requires non-essential equipment and facilities in provincial government offices to undergo a one-hour power shutdown every Monday as part of the province’s electricity conservation efforts.
The provincial government has also implemented a four-day work scheme under Executive Order No. 16 to further reduce daily electricity consumption in its offices.
The measures are intended to help manage demand, but the Capitol recognizes that cutting its own consumption cannot resolve the broader supply constraints affecting Cebu.
The provincial government therefore continues to coordinate with national agencies and energy industry stakeholders despite having no direct regulatory authority over power generation and transmission.
On Sept. 4, Capitol officials met with national energy officials to discuss Cebu’s power situation and possible measures to address the shortage.
The province is also preparing for the Cebu Energy Summit on Oct. 7, which will bring together government officials, energy stakeholders and other sectors to discuss Cebu’s power requirements and possible long-term interventions.
The summit is expected to provide a venue for stakeholders to discuss measures that could strengthen the province’s electricity supply and address its future energy needs.
Alongside these efforts, the Capitol is facilitating renewable energy developments that could provide additional generation capacity.
Among the projects being supported are the Acciona solar farm in Daanbantayan and the Alternergy wind energy project in Alegria.
The projects form part of the province’s longer-term efforts to expand its available energy sources while addressing Cebu’s growing power requirements.
