The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is expanding its digital border management systems to speed up passenger processing while strengthening screening and security at the country’s ports of entry.
The modernization efforts include the Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS), immigration e-Gates, automated passenger screening and improved airline data connectivity, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said in a Palace press briefing.
Castro said the measures are being implemented under the leadership of Immigration Commissioner Joel Viado as part of the government’s push to make public services more efficient and convenient.
The BI’s APIS Operations Center allows airlines to transmit passenger information to immigration authorities before flights arrive in the Philippines.
“Gamit ang APIS, mabilis na makakapag-transmit ang mga airline ng mga passenger information sa Immigration bago pa man dumating ang kanilang flights,” Castro said.
The advance submission of passenger information allows immigration authorities to assess and identify travelers before they reach immigration counters, according to Castro.
The system also supports faster processing for eligible passengers using immigration e-Gates. Through automated processing, qualified travelers can complete immigration clearance within a few moments.
Castro said the BI’s implementation of APIS had earlier received recognition from the International Border Management and Technologies Association.
The APIS Operations Center was also featured at the International User Community on UN goTRAVEL meeting held in Moldova on Sept. 23 and 24, where the Philippines shared its experience in expanding connectivity with airlines.
“Itinampok din ang APIS Operations Center sa International user community on U-N goTravel meeting na idinaos sa Moldova noong September 23-24 kung saan nagbahagi ang Pilipinas ng mga karanasan nito sa pagpapapalawak ng airline connectivity,” Castro added.
The BI said the modernization of its immigration and border management systems is intended to make international travel more secure and efficient while improving the passenger experience.
