A second provincial sports and cultural meet and additional temporary learning shelters in Cebu will receive funding from a P51.6-million supplemental budget approved by the Cebu Provincial School Board (CPSB).
The CPSB approved the supplemental allocation Tuesday, Oct. 6, as the Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu Province adjusts to a new school calendar that requires another provincial meet in December.
Of the total, P22 million will be distributed to the 44 municipalities under the DepEd Cebu Province schools division as assistance for the December provincial meet. Each municipality will receive P500,000.
Another P9.5 million will fund expenses for the provincial meet, including uniforms and food for officiating crews and DepEd personnel.
The CPSB also allocated P20 million for additional temporary learning shelters (TLS) in Cordova and Danao City to help address the need for more learning spaces.
The remaining P100,000 will cover the CPSB’s operational requirements.
DepEd Cebu Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Senen Priscilo Paulin said the division had already exhausted its budget for the provincial sports and cultural meet held in February.
The revised school calendar requires another provincial meet in December to prepare athletes and other participants for the regional competition scheduled in March next year.
“The new school calendar really creates a problem; that’s why I was asking for a supplemental budget because we don’t have budget anymore,” Paulin said.
The DepEd Cebu Province schools division covers 1,143 schools across 44 municipalities, serving around 650,000 students and 27,000 personnel.
The P20-million TLS allocation will support the construction of additional temporary learning spaces in Cordova and Danao City as the province continues to address classroom and learning space requirements.
The supplemental budget will be drawn from the CPSB’s trust fund, which supports programs of the DepEd Cebu Province schools division.
Provincial Treasurer Atty. Roy Salubre said during Tuesday’s meeting that the CPSB had P1.5 billion in its trust fund as of July 31.
The CPSB is chaired by Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro.
