Communities near Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island were urged to stay indoors and wear protective masks as the volcano continued emitting ash, with authorities warning of possible further activity.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Director Teresito Bacolcol issued the advice Monday during an interview on the government program Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon.
“During ash fall, they should stay indoors and close the windows and doors,” Bacolcol said.
Residents who need to go outside should wear a well-fitting N95 mask and eye protection. If an N95 mask is unavailable, they may use a surgical mask or a damp cloth, he said.
Bacolcol also warned of other volcanic hazards, including volcanic dust, ballistic projectiles, pyroclastic density currents and a possible explosive eruption.
He stressed that residents must continue observing evacuation and safety measures, particularly those living near the volcano.
“The four-kilometer permanent danger zone should remain evacuated. Communities within six kilometers should remain vigilant and ready in case the alert level is raised to Level 3. Heed the instructions of their local government units,” Bacolcol said.
Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, indicating increased volcanic unrest and the possibility of further emissions, according to Phivolcs.
The agency recorded at least five ash emission episodes on Monday. The latest occurred from 5:45 a.m. to 7:24 a.m., producing an ash plume that rose 300 meters above the crater.
Bacolcol also reported a short-lived, moderately explosive eruption on Oct. 10.
