Solar innovations seek to address corrosion, weather risks in PH

A shift toward solar modules designed to withstand corrosion and severe weather could help reduce installation and maintenance costs for renewable energy projects, as technology providers look to improve the economics of solar power in the Philippines.

LONGi, a solar technology manufacturer, presented its glass-fiber composite module frames and back-contact solar panels during a technical presentation in Cebu City on October 24, highlighting potential gains in structural durability and energy output.

The presentation formed part of a roadshow organized by LONGi, inverter manufacturer Sungrow and their Philippine distribution partner DJ Solar Corp.

LONGi representatives said the composite frames could reduce the need for certain grounding work because the material is nonconductive, potentially lowering installation expenses.

They also cited the frames’ resistance to corrosion, particularly in coastal areas, and their potential to better withstand structural stress from strong winds.

The company said tests on the composite frames showed no corrosion points after approximately 1,000 hours of testing.

LONGi also cited comparisons showing that its back-contact modules could generate up to 8.7% more power than TOPCon modules, a difference that could translate into higher energy output and revenue for solar project investors.

The company reported that it had deployed or contracted more than 3.8 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity across the Philippines since 2023, including projects involving engineering, procurement and construction firms and utility-scale developers.

Founded in 2000, LONGi manufactures monocrystalline silicon wafers, solar cells and modules, and provides photovoltaic solutions for residential, commercial and utility-scale projects.

Sungrow, which develops inverters and energy storage systems, reported more than 1,100 GW of installed power electronic converters worldwide as of June 2026. The company has operated in the renewable energy sector for more than 29 years.

DJ Solar Corp., established in Manila in 2025, distributes solar equipment and provides technical consulting for photovoltaic systems.

Its portfolio includes solar modules, inverters, mounting systems, direct-current cables and energy storage solutions, with warehouses in Cavite, Cebu and Davao City.
