In a compassionate move that acknowledges the deep bond between Cebuanos and their furry companions, Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival is pushing for the establishment of the city’s first public pet cemetery. This initiative comes as a response to growing concerns over the improper disposal of deceased pets, aiming to ensure animals are treated with dignity even after death.
Mayor Archival, a known pet enthusiast himself, shared that the idea stemmed from his own personal experience and a realization of a widespread problem. “I am a pet enthusiast. Every time a dog dies, it is left anywhere,” Archival said during a press conference on Monday, October 20. “Sa amoa lang, naa miy gamay nga garden, but I realized nga kining mga pet na namatay, bisan asa lang usahay ilabay lang sa sapa.”
Reports have surfaced detailing instances where pet owners, lacking a proper alternative, have been forced to bury or discard their beloved companions in rivers, private gardens, or even dumpsites. The lack of a dignified, public option for a pet’s final resting place has led to environmental and public health concerns.
The Mayor underscored the emotional significance of the project, emphasizing that for many Cebuanos, pets are considered part of the family. This strong bond necessitates a proper space for grieving and remembrance.
“I realized nga daghan kaayo ang mga naay pet, and gi-value nato ni sila. That’s why maghimo gyud ta ug kaugalingon nato nga pet cemetery,” he declared.
The proposed public pet cemetery is envisioned as a dedicated, respectful, and accessible space for all pet owners in the city. By providing a proper burial ground, the local government hopes to not only honor the memory of the animals but also promote responsible pet ownership and proper waste disposal within the community.
