A wave of Bisaya pride swept across the international billiards scene as Mandauehanon Genesis Ouano captured his first major international title, triumphing at the prestigious Bojue International 9-Ball Open with a thrilling 9-8 victory over fellow Filipino James Aranas.
“Thank you, Lord, for the blessing, and to my wife and family for their tireless support,” Ouano wrote, dedicating his victory to everyone who believed in him. His victory is more than just a personal milestone; it is a resonant Proud Bisaya Moment celebrated on the world stage, showcasing the enduring talent of the region.
Ouano’s path to the championship table is a testament to perseverance, fueled by a deep-seated passion for the sport and a formidable inspiration. In an exclusive interview, the newly crowned champion shares the story of his journey, from his initial love for billiards to the challenges of competing abroad and his heartfelt message to the next generation.
The Cue, The Inspiration, and The Journey
When asked about the genesis of his love for billiards, Ouano points to an icon whose name is synonymous with Filipino cue sports excellence.
“Because of my idol, the one and only Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes,” Ouano states. “I’ve admired him since I was a child because he’s a great trickshot artist and a very humble person.”
Reyes’s masterful play and humility lit the spark that would eventually lead Ouano to international competition. However, the path to the winner’s circle was far from easy, especially when entering the international arena in Indonesia.
“It was hard, of course, it took a few tries before I became a champion,” he recalls. The memory of his early attempts is particularly vivid. “I remember my third return here in Indonesia. I only brought $100 with me. The money I bought the ticket was my own because I didn’t have a sponsor.”
With financial constraints and the odds stacked against him, Ouano relied on sheer determination. “All I had here was courage. I told myself that one day I would also become a champion. No matter what happens, I just wouldn’t give up. And this is what the Lord has given me now. THANK YOU LORD.” His dedication and faith ultimately paved the way for this glorious achievement.
A Victory for Family and Faith
In the midst of the celebration, Ouano shares the credit for his success, dedicating the hard-fought victory to his most important pillars of support.
“I dedicate this to my wife and two children and especially my sponsor Adrian for his tireless support, thank you very much,” he says, his family and key supporter being foremost in his mind.
Message to Aspiring Youth
Finally, Ouano offers powerful words of encouragement to the aspiring youth looking to pick up a cue and pursue the sport of billiards.
“To the young people who want to try billiards, it’s hard at first, but once you learn, you’ll be able to do it and you’ll be a success,” he assures them.
For those already on the path but struggling for a breakthrough, he offers a message of unwavering hope: “To those who have started but haven’t become champions yet, don’t lose hope. The Lord isn’t giving it to you right now, but he will give it to you soon at the right time. Just wait and keep trying.”
His concluding words summarize the spirit of his victory, a mantra for hard work and faith: “Nothing is impossible for those who work hard and always pray.”
Genesis Ouano’s triumph is a symbol of hope and a reminder that with courage, prayer, and an unwavering Bisaya spirit, champions are made.
