An elderly carabao named “Lola Batik,” who spent over three decades working in the fields without a proper shelter has been given a new lease on life after being rescued by the animal welfare group, The Cat House.

According to the group’s reports, the carabao served her owners for 30 years but was reportedly kept tied to a tree even during typhoons. When she grew old and was no longer deemed useful, her owners decided to sell her for slaughter with a trader noting the price could be recouped from the sale of her hide and meat which is a perspective that views the animal as mere livestock.

The rescue organization intervened, purchasing Lola Batik to spare her from this fate. The story sparks a poignant reflection: instead of selling faithful animals when they are old, we must learn to value their lives as part of the family and find ways to grant them a proper retirement. She has since been relocated to a sanctuary where she now has her own shed, clean water and ample food, and is described as enjoying the simple pleasure of resting.

The group continues to raise funds to support Lola Batik and other rescued farm animals, highlighting the importance of providing dignified retirement for animals that have spent their lives in service.
