The Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) reported a peaceful holiday season and New Year celebration, with no incidents involving firecrackers or fireworks.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Mercy Villaro, MCPO spokesperson, credited the orderly situation to heightened police visibility, continuous implementation of Oplan Bandilyo, and sustained information campaigns conducted across all city police stations.
“These efforts were reinforced through close coordination with the Mandaue City government,” Villaro said, noting that strict enforcement of Executive Order No. 2025-071, which regulates the sale, trade, and use of firecrackers, helped ensure public safety.
The order allows sales only through authorized vendors in designated areas.
Villaro added that residents showed improved compliance, responding positively to safety reminders and advisories.
“This shows the growing awareness and cooperation of the public,” she said, emphasizing that the incident-free celebration reflects both effective government campaigns and the community’s shared responsibility in maintaining peace and order.
Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano earlier warned that authorities would take firm action against anyone violating the firecracker ban or other safety regulations.
While acknowledging that fireworks are traditionally used to welcome the New Year, Ouano stressed that the city would not allow the practice during the holiday season to prevent accidents and injuries.
In preparation for the 2026 New Year, the MCPO deployed at least 300 personnel across high-traffic areas, including churches, shopping centers, public markets, plazas, restaurants, and transport terminals, ensuring strict compliance with the ordinance banning illegal firecrackers.
Police officers remained on standby throughout the city to respond promptly to any emergencies, ensuring a safe and orderly celebration as Mandaue welcomed the new year. (VCL)
