Unsettled weather will persist over Cebu and the rest of the Visayas in the coming days, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported.

The state weather bureau attributed the conditions to a shear line that is bringing continuous rains and rough sea conditions across the region.

In its Visayas weather outlook, Pagasa said the shear line is affecting Palawan and the Visayas, while the northeast monsoon (amihan) influences the rest of Luzon, and easterlies prevail over Mindanao.

The system is expected to bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms over much of the Visayas, including Cebu.

Strong to gale-force northeast winds may affect the Visayas, Palawan including the Kalayaan Islands, and Occidental Mindoro, resulting in rough seas and hazardous marine conditions.

For Cebu, Pagasa forecast cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms from January 3 to 7. Temperatures are expected to range from 26 to 31 degrees Celsius during this five-day period.

On Saturday, January 3, Cebu will experience cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms, light to moderate northeast winds, and slight to moderate coastal waters. Similar conditions are expected on January 4, with temperatures slightly cooler at 26 to 29 degrees Celsius.

From January 5 to 7, intermittent rains are expected to continue, accompanied by light to moderate northeast winds and generally slight to moderate seas.

Pagasa urged local government units and residents to remain alert, particularly in flood-prone and landslide-susceptible areas, as moderate to heavy rainfall may occur at times.

Fisherfolk and operators of small boats were advised to exercise caution or avoid sailing during rough sea conditions.

Nationwide, the weather bureau said cloudy skies and rain showers will affect large parts of the country due to the combined effects of the northeast monsoon, shear line, and easterlies.

Light rains are forecast over Metro Manila, Calabarzon, the Ilocos Region, and Central Luzon, while the rest of Luzon and the Visayas may experience scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms caused by the shear line.

Mindanao may also see scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to easterlies.

Pagasa reiterated its warning of possible flooding and landslides in areas that may experience prolonged or heavy rainfall, and advised the public to continue monitoring official weather advisories in the coming days. (LLP)
