Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano has announced an interim plan to ensure continuous garbage collection in Mandaue City following a landslide at the Binaliw landfill.
In a public advisory, Ouano said the city has established a temporary transfer station in Barangay Umapad as an emergency measure while authorities work on a long-term solution.
The facility became operational yesterday, January 10, and has already begun accepting waste from barangay garbage trucks.
To manage the flow of waste, the city has implemented a scheduled dumping system from Monday to Saturday.
From 4 a.m. to 10 a.m., the station will receive garbage from the Kabukiran Cluster—barangays Casili, Tawason, Cubacub, Pagsabungan, Basak, Jagobiao, and Canduman; the Centro Cluster—barangays Guizo, Mantuyong, Centro, Cambaro, Alang-alang, and Ibabao-Estancia; and the Mahiga Cluster—barangays Banilad, Bakilid, Tipolo, and Subangdaku.
From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., collection will focus on the Butuanon Cluster, covering barangays Cabancalan, Tingub, Casuntingan, Maguikay, and Tabok, and the Kadagatan Cluster, including barangays Labogon, Paknaan, Umapad, Opao, and Looc.
Ouano urged residents to strictly follow proper garbage disposal practices as the city enforces tighter waste segregation policies amid the emergency.
Biodegradable or perishable waste will be composted at the Mandaue Green Learning Park (MGLP), while recyclables will be sent to the Guun facility in Consolacion.
“This is our temporary emergency response while we continue to look for the best long-term solution,” Ouano said, calling on Mandauehanons to cooperate as the city addresses the impact of the landfill incident. (VCL)
