Heightened security now surrounds the Cebu Provincial Capitol after Pamela Baricuatro confirmed she has received reported death threats that she believes may be linked to her administration’s intensified crackdown on illegal activities.

Speaking to reporters, Baricuatro said the possible motive could be tied to ongoing operations against criminal networks across the province.

“I suppose that should be one,” she said when asked if the crackdown could be behind the threat.

“But who knows, there is something else. But then for now, something I can think of is we’re very active sa crackdown on illegal activities in the province hence the decrease in the crime rate sa province,” she added.

The governor cited sustained enforcement efforts in recent months targeting illegal drugs, cigarette smuggling, illegal quarrying, and illegal gambling, noting that these operations have coincided with a reported drop in crime incidents.

While acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, Baricuatro declined to disclose further details, citing security concerns.

“Ongoing pa gihapon ang investigation but I cannot divulge for security reasons,” she said.

She confirmed that security measures at the Capitol have been tightened, with additional personnel deployed, and expressed gratitude to the Philippine National Police for acting on the intelligence information.

“I’m just thankful to the PNP sa pag-determine on this threat. Pasalamat lang sad ko kay naa may security,” she said.

Despite the threat, Baricuatro said her official duties and public engagements continue as scheduled.

“I never let it get in the way, my schedule, in my governance here in the Capitol,” she said

Asked if the threats affected her resolve, she replied “no,” emphasizing her commitment to public service.

“Que sera sera (What will be, will be). That’s my mandate, I have to serve to the people regardless of how many death threats there are,” she said.

Earlier, the governor disclosed that intelligence information allegedly pointed to a P2.5-million contract to kill her, with a supposed hired gunman from Mindanao reportedly tapped.

She also said the alleged attack might not necessarily occur in Cebu and described the threat as possibly a “demolition job.”

Authorities continue to validate the report and pursue those behind the alleged plan.

When asked for a message to those supposedly threatening her, Baricuatro said: “Watch out mo.” (SBA)
