Authorities have detained the suspect in the killing of a 12-year-old girl who was discovered lifeless in a wooded area in Sitio Pajo, Barangay Cabitoonan, Toledo City, on February 19, 2026, in a case that has shocked the local community.
The victim was identified as Crystal Joy Lagaras Abarquez, a resident of Planta, Poblacion.
She had earlier been reported missing and was the subject of a search for six days after she was last seen on February 11, 2026.
Her mother was able to confirm her identity through a necklace she was wearing when her body was found.
Police identified the suspect as Rowell Lagaras Villapina Jr., the victim’s uncle and a resident of Looc-Bato, Toledo City.
He is now under detention as authorities continue to build the case.
A witness told investigators that the suspect had even joined efforts to look for the girl after she was reported missing and allegedly acted concerned about her disappearance.
The witness noted that he appeared worried while helping in the search, particularly because he and the victim’s mother are siblings.
According to the victim’s grandfather, the suspect is married and has two children.
Family members also said he was close to the girl.
The victim’s grandmother shared that the suspect had long been struggling with illegal drug use.
The discovery of the girl’s body ended days of uncertainty for the family, who had been searching and hoping for her safe return.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the motive behind the killing and to gather further evidence.
Police said efforts are ongoing to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death are fully established and that appropriate charges are pursued as the case moves forward.
Officials also emphasized their commitment to securing justice for the victim and her family.
