At least 14 households in Barangay Subabasbas, Lapu-Lapu City have received solar lighting units through a community-based initiative promoting renewable energy in coastal areas.
The beneficiaries are members of the Kabakhawan Riverside Urban Poor Association (KARUPA), who welcomed representatives from Light of Hope Philippines and Pagtambayayong Foundation Inc. during a recent site visit to inspect the installed solar lights.
The project aims to introduce clean and sustainable energy solutions to underserved communities, particularly those in coastal and island areas where access to reliable electricity remains limited.
During the visit, the organizations checked the functionality of the solar lighting units installed in the homes of the beneficiaries.
City Councilor Annabeth Cuizon joined the activity, accompanying the team as they toured the community.
Residents also raised concerns about the need for a communal toilet in the area. In response, the visiting groups extended a cash donation to support the improvement of sanitation facilities.
Cuizon noted that the donation ultimately benefited a total of 49 households in the barangay.
The representatives also paid a courtesy visit to Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan at City Hall, joined by members of Vriendschapsband Haarlemmermeer–Cebu.
Discussions centered on potential collaborations on community programs, including renewable energy projects and upcycling initiatives.
Light of Hope Philippines works with remote and coastal communities to provide solar technologies and programs designed to strengthen disaster resilience and promote sustainable development.
The recent Subabasbas initiative reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to improving living conditions in underserved areas. (VCL)
