During Women’s Month, Pamela Baricuatro reflected on the pressures of public service, likening her experience as Cebu governor to that of “Wonder Woman” as she faces criticism and political challenges.
The governor said leadership, especially for women, often comes with constant tests of patience, courage and resilience.
“Being a woman leader today isn’t a victory alone; it’s a daily test of grace and grit,” Baricuatro said.
She shared that governance involves more than policymaking, noting that leaders often face personal attacks and political pressure.
Baricuatro admitted that her path in public service has been difficult, saying she has endured slander, threats and political hostility, including legal battles related to cyber libel complaints.
“The path isn’t easy. I’ve faced slander, death threats, political persecution,” she said.
Despite these challenges, the governor said she remains focused on serving the people of Cebu Province and fulfilling the mandate given to her by voters.
Baricuatro also acknowledged that criticism sometimes comes from within political circles, including allies who question her decisions or motives.
“I’ve reached the pinnacle of my career, and challenges keep mounting—from party mates to mayors who claim I’m manipulated,” she said.
Still, she said she draws strength from her family and the continued support of ordinary Cebuanos who believe in her leadership.
Baricuatro also used the occasion to highlight the broader struggles faced by women, urging society to reflect on how judgment and hostility can make leadership more difficult for women.
“If I, who has weathered this storm, feel overwhelmed, how much more do other women face?” she said.
The governor called for greater empathy and understanding, encouraging people to support initiatives that uplift women and communities.
Ending on a lighter note, Baricuatro shared how she copes with the pressures of leadership.
“I think I’m a wonder woman. I always wonder how I manage,” she said. (SBA)
