Commuters in Cebu City can now ride selected buses for free during weekday evenings as the local government responds to rising fuel prices and transport disruptions.

Mayor Nestor Archival announced the temporary measure on Friday, saying the free rides are available Monday to Friday starting at 5 p.m.

The initiative aims to help workers and students who face limited public transport options due to higher fuel costs.

“Isip tabang sa atong mga commuters, ilabi na sa atong mga trabahante ug estudyante, sugod karon adlawa aduna na kitay FREE BUS RIDES,” Archival said.

The program covers three major routes connecting the city’s north and south districts to downtown Cebu, with buses running in both directions.

For the south, buses will travel along:

Bulacao – N. Bacalso Avenue – P. del Rosario – Day-as – Colon Street, and back

Petron Guadalupe – V. Rama Avenue – Cebu City Medical Center – eMall – Leon Kilat Street – Colon Street, and back

For the north route, buses will run:

Banilad–Talamban Road – Ayala Center Cebu – M.J. Cuenco Avenue – Colon Street, and back

Archival said the selected routes serve key commuting corridors linking residential areas to commercial and transport hubs downtown.

He added that the program targets workers returning from jobs and students leaving school in the late afternoon and evening when public transport may be limited.

The city has not yet announced how long the free rides will continue.

Archival urged commuters to use the service responsibly and observe safety and courtesy while traveling.

“Daghang salamat ug mag-amping kitang tanan,” he said. (LLP)
