A new photo documentary by photojournalist Ferdinand Edralin shines a spotlight on the daily lives of highland farmers in Mantalongon, widely known as the “vegetable basket” of Cebu.
Edralin and his team began their journey before sunrise, arriving in the mountain village shortly after 5 a.m. Guided by locals, they trekked along a narrow and slippery trail leading to Osmeña Peak, one of Cebu’s most popular mountain destinations. At the summit, thick fog briefly covered the peak’s jagged hills, with the team spending nearly an hour observing the shifting mist across the landscape.
As they descended, Edralin documented the everyday routines of farmers harvesting cabbage, carrots, and leafy vegetables that supply markets across the province. The group also visited the local bagsakan, where farmers bring freshly harvested produce for traders and distributors.
The team later shared breakfast with members of the Dalaguete Tourism Office, gaining further insight into the agricultural community that sustains Cebu’s vegetable supply.
Through the documentary, Edralin aims to capture the resilience, dedication, and quiet dignity of farmers in the highlands. The project serves as a tribute to the hardworking individuals whose labor helps feed communities across Cebu.
