Prices of rice have gone up in one of the city’s busiest markets, with vendors at the Carbon Public Market reporting an increase of about ₱2 to ₱15 per kilo depending on the variety and brand.
According to one vendor, the adjustment reflects higher prices from their suppliers, which has forced them to pass on the cost to consumers. The vendor emphasized that the increase is not connected to recent tensions in the Middle East, noting that price hikes have already been observed since February.
Shoppers visiting the market as of 5:00 p.m. today are seeing varying price points, with differences depending on rice quality, type, and source. Premium varieties naturally command higher prices, while more affordable options remain available for budget-conscious buyers.
Despite the increases, rice remains a staple for households across Cebu, prompting many buyers to continue purchasing in smaller quantities to manage expenses. Some vendors also shared that they are doing their best to keep prices as stable as possible while dealing with fluctuating supply costs.
Market observers note that rice prices can be influenced by several factors, including supply chain costs, transportation, and sourcing conditions from different regions. These dynamics often result in gradual price changes that are felt directly by consumers in local markets.
For now, both vendors and buyers are closely monitoring the situation, hoping for more stable pricing in the coming weeks.
