A new passenger ferry service set to begin operations after Holy Week is expected to lower commuting costs and help decongest traffic between Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City.

The seabus service will provide an alternative transport route for workers and residents traveling between the two cities, particularly those commuting to and from Mactan, as fuel prices and fares remain high.

City officials said the initiative aims to reduce traffic volume along major roads while offering a more efficient and affordable option for commuters.

The service will be operated by Carlos A. Gothong Lines Inc. Company president Calvin Boniface Gothong said the ferry will support efforts to improve connectivity and public transportation.

“Ang expected nato sa atong operation after Holy Week, to support the city’s initiatives on connectivity and public transport. We’re helping Mandaue City to lower expenses for our Mandauehanons, para lang nga makatravel sila to Mactan,” Gothong said.

Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano welcomed the development, citing its potential to ease transportation costs.

He also appealed to lower the proposed fare from P35 to P20 to further reduce the burden on commuters.

“Haom sad gyud kaayo ni karon tungod kay taas naman gyud kaayo ang atong pletehan, atong gasolina, atong krudo. Haom gyud kaayo. We gave an alternative sad to decongest traffic here in the city of Mandaue as well as Lapu-Lapu,” Ouano said.

The ferry service was formally launched on March 18, attended by Ouano, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” Chan, and company officials.

The vessel, GT Express Uno, will operate at least three morning trips from Mandaue to Lapu-Lapu and three return trips in the evening to accommodate daily commuters.

To improve accessibility, free shuttle services will be available at designated pick-up points, including Parkmall, Mandaue City Hall, and Pacific Mall.

Passengers will be transported to the GT Ferry Wharf in Barangay Subangdaku, North Reclamation Area, where the seabus is docked.

The ferry will arrive at the Muelle Osmeña Lighthouse in Lapu-Lapu City.

Chan expressed support for the initiative, noting its role in improving commuter mobility and strengthening inter-city connectivity. (VCL)
