How This Google Maps Tip Can Save You 20+ Minutes on Every Trip

In an era where real-time travel information plays a key role in daily commuting, a simple yet often overlooked feature in Google Maps can help commuters and travelers save significant time on the road.

According to a report by Tom’s Guide, users can cut down travel delays by checking traffic conditions before starting a trip — without immediately entering a destination in the app. Traditionally, many people open Google Maps only after deciding where to go. However, by opening the app first and activating the “Traffic” layer, users can view current road conditions at a glance. Roads are color-coded: green for clear, orange for moderate traffic, and red for heavy congestion, allowing commuters to spot delays before leaving.

This proactive use of the traffic layer can result in savings of more than 20 minutes per day for daily commuters, according to the report. To enable it, users open Google Maps, tap the “Layers” icon, and select Traffic. Real-time traffic data then appears over the map, even without entering a destination.

Experts emphasize that regular use of this feature can reduce guesswork and help avoid peak congestion or problem areas. In fast-paced cities where traffic is a daily challenge, this small adjustment can make a noticeable difference in travel efficiency.
