Police arrested a 41-year-old man after he allegedly stabbed his 10-year-old nephew during a family argument early Thursday morning along C. Ouano Street, Barangay Looc, Mandaue City.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Mercy Villaro-Kantuna of the Mandaue City Police Office said the incident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. and was reported 20 minutes later.

The suspect, identified only by the alias “Chester,” reportedly got into a dispute with a 15-year-old relative over moving beds inside their shared home, owned by the children’s grandmother.

The argument escalated after the teenager allegedly pushed him.

Villaro-Kantuna said the suspect became enraged, prompting the 10-year-old victim, Jaymark Genggani, to intervene.

The suspect then allegedly stabbed the child in the back with a screwdriver.

Investigators noted that the suspect had been drinking earlier in Barangay Cambaro, Mandaue City.

“Ang napahimungtan sa kasuko aning suspect kay ang bata nga nakamata kay nakadungog sa kasaba sa gawas,” Villaro-Kantuna said, referring to the child waking up and reacting to the argument.

Authorities immediately apprehended the uncle, recovered the weapon, and took him into custody.

The victim was rushed by his grandmother to Mandaue City District Hospital, where he is now in stable condition.

Charges are being prepared against the suspect for stabbing under Republic Act 7610, or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act. (VCL)
