Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan is proposing a temporary reduction in terminal fees for public utility vehicles (PUVs) to help drivers cope with increasing fuel prices.
The city government is considering adjusting transport-related charges as rising fuel costs and other operating expenses continue to affect drivers and commuters alike.
The proposal is scheduled for discussion during the next regular session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, with potential implementation as early as next week.
Under the plan, terminal fees would be lowered to P15 from P25 for v-hires, P10 from P20 for jeepneys, and P5 from P10 for multicabs.
Chan said the measure is intended to provide immediate financial relief for drivers while helping maintain more affordable fares for commuters.
If approved, the fee reduction could benefit hundreds of PUV operators in the city and ease transportation costs during peak travel periods, including the upcoming Holy Week.
The move comes amid similar initiatives by the Cebu Provincial Government, which recently implemented a three-month reduction in terminal fees at the North and South Bus Terminals to cushion the impact of rising fuel costs.
Under the provincial adjustment, buses now pay P200 instead of P250, V-hires P150 from P200, and taxis P10 from P20.
Governor Pamela Baricuatro said the policy balances support for drivers with reliable service for commuters and emphasized that the adjustments fall within existing authority, requiring no new ordinance.
Additional measures, such as free bus rides for vulnerable sectors, upgraded ventilation, and increased manpower, are also being deployed to improve the travel experience. (VCL)
