CEBU CITY — Catholic faithful gathered in large numbers at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu and the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral on Sunday, March 29, 2026, to mark Palm Sunday, signaling the start of the Holy Week observance.

Devotees carried palm fronds, locally known as palaspas, for the traditional blessing, commemorating the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. The woven palms, often crafted into intricate designs, were raised by the faithful as priests conducted the rites outside and within church grounds.

The annual tradition drew families, parish groups, and visitors, filling the historic churches with prayers and solemn reflection. Church leaders reminded attendees of the deeper meaning of Holy Week, calling on the faithful to observe the season with repentance, humility, and renewed faith.

Palm Sunday begins a series of religious activities leading up to Easter Sunday, with masses, processions, and devotional practices expected to continue throughout the week across Cebu.
