Maundy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, is a significant observance in the Christian calendar that marks the beginning of the Sacred Triduum—the three most solemn days leading up to Easter Sunday. It is commemorated one day before Good Friday and reflects the final moments of Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry before His crucifixion.

This day primarily recalls the Last Supper of Jesus with His disciples, where He instituted the Holy Eucharist and demonstrated humility through the washing of the disciples’ feet. These acts symbolize love, service, and sacrifice—core values in the Christian faith. The word “Maundy” is derived from the Latin term mandatum, meaning “commandment,” referring to Jesus’ instruction to His followers to “love one another.”

In many parts of the Philippines, Maundy Thursday is observed with church services such as the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, followed by Visita Iglesia, where the faithful visit multiple churches for prayer and reflection. It also marks the beginning of a more solemn and reflective atmosphere as communities prepare for the commemoration of Christ’s passion and death on Good Friday.

As the faithful observe this sacred day, Maundy Thursday serves as a reminder of humility, compassion, and unwavering faith—values that continue to inspire millions around the world.
