MINGLANILLA, CEBU — The “Easter Capital of Cebu” is once again alive with color and devotion as the municipality officially kicks off the Sugat Kabanhawan Festival 2026. This annual celebration, which merges deep-seated religious traditions with vibrant cultural festivities, features a week-long lineup of events culminating on Easter Sunday.

The festivities began on March 29 with a grand opening concert, followed by a series of nightly competitions designed to showcase local talent, including the Singing Idol and the Minglanilla Got Talent search.

A Blend of Faith and Culture

While the early half of the week focused on entertainment and talent showcases, the schedule shifts toward solemnity as the community observes the peak of Holy Week.

  • April 1: A religious procession was held at 5:00 PM.
  • April 3 (Good Friday): The community will gather for the solemn Good Friday Procession at 5:00 PM.
  • April 4 (Black Saturday): A day of quiet reflection and preparation for the upcoming resurrection.

The Grand Finale

The festival reaches its fever pitch on Sunday, April 5, with a jam-packed schedule celebrating the Resurrection of Christ

  • 1:00 AM: The “Sugat Proper” and Holy Mass, the heart of the celebration, depicting the meeting of the Risen Christ and the Blessed Mother.
  • 4:00 PM: The streets will transform into a stage for the highly anticipated Street Dancing competition
  • 6:00 PM: The festivities will conclude with the Festival Queen Competition and Ritual Showdown, where various contingents will compete for the top prize in a display of choreography, costume, and storytelling.

Local authorities expect thousands of pilgrims and tourists to flock to the town to witness one of the most famous Easter celebrations in the Philippines. Whether you are there for the prayerful processions or the high-energy dance battles, Minglanilla’s Sugat Kabanhawan remains a premier destination for the Lenten season.
