Fuel tanks and cooking gas supplies are now under tighter scrutiny in Mandaue as complaints over sudden price increases continue to surface.

The City Council has approved a resolution calling for stricter monitoring of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and petroleum products amid rising prices and reports of possible irregularities.

Resolution No. 380-2026, authored by Councilor Jesus Arcilla Jr. and Liga ng mga Barangay President Dante Borbajo, directs the Philippine National Police–Mandaue City Police Office and the Business Permit and Licensing Office to intensify surveillance against hoarding, profiteering, and price manipulation.

Arcilla said the measure aims to ensure closer monitoring of LPG and fuel prices and prevent abuses affecting consumers.

“Maong ato ng gipa close monitoring sa atong mga police ug sa BPLO,” he said.

He noted that his office has received multiple complaints regarding the rapid increase in prices, prompting the council to act.

Arcilla said both the police and the BPLO have been tasked to check compliance among retailers and ensure that pricing remains within regulations.

He added that the resolution will help the city respond more quickly to concerns raised by residents.

Arcilla also linked the recent surge in prices to global developments, saying the conflict abroad contributed to the spike in LPG and petroleum costs.

He said prices have risen by nearly 50 percent, with noticeable differences among sellers, raising concerns about possible manipulation.

The councilor also pointed to suspected hoarding practices.

“Kay naa man gud uban kanang old stock pa niya inig saka diha pa nila ipaggawas bitaw,” he said.

Monitoring will cover all retailers across the city’s 27 barangays, with authorities set to identify violations and recommend appropriate sanctions.

City officials said the move is part of efforts to protect consumers and ensure fair pricing amid ongoing economic pressures. (VCL)
