A Grab delivery rider was brutally assaulted and robbed in an early morning incident on April 14, 2026, along Andres Abellana Street in Barangay Guadalupe, raising renewed concerns over rider safety in the city.

The victim, identified as James Somiter, was reportedly waiting for a booking around 2:00 a.m. when two unidentified men riding a motorcycle approached him. Armed with an ice pick, the suspects declared a robbery. When the victim resisted, he was physically attacked and beaten.

Somiter was later found unconscious on the sidewalk at approximately 8:00 a.m. by a concerned citizen who immediately sought help. Authorities said the suspects fled the scene after taking the victim’s belongings, including his wallet containing more than ₱2,000, his cellphone, and his Suzuki Smash motorcycle.

The Philippine National Police has launched a hot pursuit operation and is currently conducting backtracking efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects.

The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by delivery riders, especially during late-night and early morning hours. Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help prevent similar crimes.
