A mix of transport, food, and financial assistance is being rolled out in Lapu-Lapu City as rising fuel and electricity costs continue to strain households and workers.
The city government has stepped up relief and transport assistance programs for vulnerable sectors following a coordination meeting led by Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan.
Officials said the interventions are intended to provide short-term relief to commuters, workers, and island residents affected by rising energy and commodity prices.
Among the ongoing measures is the continuation of the city’s “Libreng Sakay” program, which offers free rides during peak morning and evening hours.
Transport workers are also set to receive additional support, with 1,264 qualified public utility vehicle and taxi drivers expected to benefit from fuel subsidies from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), in coordination with the local government.
Food assistance remains a key component of the city’s response, with the rollout of the P20-per-kilo rice program in island barangays.
Distributions are scheduled this week in Barangays Pangan-an and Caohagan, with a follow-up delivery in Barangay Caubian.
Beneficiaries include senior citizens, Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) members, solo parents, and persons with disabilities.
Displaced workers from the Mactan Economic Zone are also included, with more than 500 individuals receiving rice assistance.
The city is also preparing financial aid for nearly 800 registered fisherfolk affected by higher fuel costs.
City data showed that from March 26 to April 10, a total of 2,824 individuals from various vulnerable sectors have already received assistance through programs supported by Food Terminal Inc. and local government funds.
Alongside relief efforts, the city’s General Services Office reported energy-saving measures across government facilities, generating nearly P700,000 in savings.
Mayor King-Chan said the city’s response focuses on ensuring assistance reaches those most affected by the current economic pressures.
“At the center of our efforts remains one clear priority: the welfare of every Oponganon family,” she said.
She added that the city will continue monitoring conditions and adjust programs as needed. (VCL)
