CEBU CITY, Philippines — April 18, 2026 — Students from University of San Carlos gathered on Saturday afternoon for a solemn candlelight tribute honoring the life of 18-year-old college student Braille Nichole Kwek. The memorial was held beneath the Archbishop Reyes Avenue flyover in Cebu City—the very site where the tragic incident that claimed her life occurred on April 14, 2026.
The tribute, organized by the USC Supreme Student Council, drew hundreds of attendees including Nichole’s family, friends, classmates, university officials, and local leaders. Among those present were her father Bryan Kwek, her aunt Blanche, other relatives, and Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival, who joined the community in mourning her untimely passing.
Participants lit candles and laid flowers along the roadside, transforming the area into a space of remembrance and reflection. Messages of love and grief were shared, followed by a moment of silence and collective prayers offered for Nichole. The gathering reflected not only the deep sorrow felt by the Carolinian community but also the strong sense of unity and support among those she touched.
Tragic Incident Raises Road Safety Concerns
Nichole lost her life on April 14, 2026, after the motorcycle she was riding was reportedly struck by an ambulance that allegedly counterflowed along the flyover. The incident has sparked widespread concern among residents and netizens, particularly regarding road safety measures and the conduct of emergency vehicles operating in busy urban areas.
According to the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), Nichole’s family formally filed a complaint on April 17, 2026, for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against the driver of a Barangay Apas ambulance believed to be involved in the fatal crash. Authorities confirmed that an investigation is ongoing as they gather further evidence and testimonies related to the incident.
Final Journey to Camotes
Nichole’s remains will be brought to her hometown in Camotes Island on Sunday, April 19, 2026. A nine-day novena will be held in her honor, allowing family, friends, and community members to pay their last respects. She is scheduled to be laid to rest on April 27, 2026, at the Poro Public Cemetery.
As tributes continue to pour in, Nichole is remembered as a kind and vibrant young woman whose life, though cut short, left a lasting impact on those around her. The call for justice and safer roads grows stronger, echoing the collective hope that no other family will have to endure a similar tragedy.
