The countdown to ASEAN-related activities in May has triggered parallel citywide preparations in Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue, with both local governments tightening security coordination and accelerating infrastructure and cleanliness efforts along key routes.
In Lapu-Lapu City, Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan has directed barangay officials to step up coordination as the city prepares to host international delegates, stressing cleanliness, order, and security readiness.
During a recent meeting with barangay captains, King-Chan instructed local leaders to closely monitor activities in their areas, hold regular coordination meetings, and ensure residents are informed about possible security restrictions during the event period.
The city is preparing to receive an estimated 11 heads of state for ASEAN-related engagements.
Security preparations are being led by the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, which is set to deploy around 7,000 personnel.
Measures will include tightened security in key areas such as Mactan, Punta Engaño, and the shrine vicinity.
Authorities said no full road closures are expected, but traffic advisories will be implemented when necessary.
A no-sail zone for fisherfolk will also be enforced as part of security protocols.
Alongside security measures, the city has launched a series of preparatory works, including clearing operations along the airport-to-Maribago corridor, repairs of sidewalks and fences, reorganization of public areas, and installation of ornamental plants to improve visual presentation.
Barangay-level efforts are also ongoing, with weekly clean-up drives and continuous clearing operations reported across key routes.
The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) is supporting the initiative by providing cleaning equipment to barangays, while several villages have begun plant box and roadside beautification projects.
In Mandaue City, preparations are also centered on beautification and safety improvements along major thoroughfares.
City Administrator Atty. Gonzalo Malig-on Jr. said local officials have coordinated with barangays to clean main roads and improve the condition of walls and public-facing structures across the city.
He also noted improvements in lighting along the second bridge, with additional light posts installed as part of ongoing enhancements.
Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano continues to coordinate with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for infrastructure-related preparations.
The Mandaue City Police Office is likewise preparing security measures to ensure the safe passage of delegates traveling through the city.
Malig-on said the goal is to ensure smooth and secure movement of visiting officials across Mandaue’s routes.
Cleaning operations and fence installations are also ongoing in select areas, including portions near Pasilong sa Paradise in Barangay Guizo, as part of efforts to improve the city’s overall appearance ahead of the international event. (VCL)
