Two Asturias Residents Poisoned After Eating Tulingan Fish

In Asturias, two residents were reportedly affected after consuming tulingan (a type of tuna), prompting a public health warning from local authorities.

According to Dr. Michael Jann Alasco of the Rural Health Unit (RHU) Asturias, the individuals developed symptoms shortly after eating the fish. These included skin redness, swelling, and sudden discomfort—signs commonly linked to histamine or scombroid fish poisoning.

The patients were quickly brought to a local infirmary clinic, where they received appropriate treatment. Both have since recovered and were discharged after their condition improved.

Health officials believe the cause of the incident is histamine buildup, which can occur when fish like tulingan is not stored properly or is no longer fresh. As fish spoils, bacteria can produce high levels of histamine, leading to allergic-like reactions when consumed.

Dr. Alasco is urging the public to remain cautious when buying and eating fish, ensuring it is fresh and properly handled. He also advised consumers to avoid fish with unusual odor or taste, as these may indicate spoilage.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and encourage anyone experiencing similar symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.
