Saint Francis of Assisi one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church, remembered for his deep love for God, simplicity of life, and compassion for all creation. Known as the patron saint of animals and the environment, his life continues to inspire millions of people around the world.
Born in 1181 or 1182 in Assisi, Saint Francis was originally named Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone. He grew up in a wealthy family, as his father was a successful cloth merchant. As a young man, Francis enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle and dreamed of becoming a knight. However, his life changed after experiencing illness and imprisonment during a war between Assisi and nearby towns.
During a time of prayer, Francis felt called by God to live a life of poverty and service. One of the most famous moments in his life happened when he heard Christ speak to him while praying before a crucifix in San Damiano Church, saying, “Rebuild my Church.” Taking the message literally at first, Francis began repairing abandoned chapels. Later, he understood that God was calling him to renew the faith of the Church through humility and service.
Francis gave up his family’s wealth and devoted himself to helping the poor, caring for the sick, and preaching peace. In 1209, he founded the Order of Friars Minor, commonly known as the Franciscans. He was later joined by Saint Clare of Assisi, who founded the Poor Clares for women inspired by Francis’ teachings.
Saint Francis is also known for his love of nature. Stories tell of him preaching to birds and caring deeply for animals, seeing all creatures as part of God’s creation. Because of this, he was declared the patron saint of ecology by Pope John Paul II in 1979.
Saint Francis died on October 3, 1226, and was canonized as a saint by Pope Gregory IX just two years later.

Construction began in 1228, just one day after his canonization, and it remains a major pilgrimage site today. The basilica houses his tomb and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
