Alcohol and Sugary Drinks Are Becoming More Affordable, A Growing Concern

post-title

According to the World Health Organization, most countries have shown no reduction in the affordability of alcoholic beverages and sugary drinks since 2022. This trend raises concerns because when unhealthy products become easier to afford, people are more likely to buy and consume them more often.

Recent findings reveal that sugary drinks have become more affordable in 62 countries. At the same time, beer is now more affordable in 56 countries, while spirits have become more affordable in 67 countries. These numbers highlight a global issue that can contribute to increasing health risks.

Higher consumption of sugary drinks can lead to obesity, diabetes, tooth decay, and other chronic health problems. Meanwhile, excessive alcohol consumption is linked to liver disease, heart problems, accidents, addiction, and mental health concerns.

When affordability rises, demand often increases—and so does the potential harm to individuals, families, and communities. Promoting healthier choices, stronger public health policies, and greater awareness can help address this growing issue and protect public health.
