The Mandaue City Council has approved a resolution introducing a heat break measure to protect government personnel working outdoors amid extreme temperatures.
Councilor Joel Seno, who authored the measure, said it proposes a 30 minute heat break, with guidelines still being finalized to ensure proper implementation without disrupting operations.
He said the initiative focuses on field workers, particularly traffic enforcers and other personnel exposed to prolonged heat.
“Because tungod sa kainit ba, we don’t know, even the healthiest person nga maka-encounter og kainit sama karong panahona, vulnerable gyud kaayo nianang mga ingon ana nga untoward nga mga reaction sa lawas,” Seno said.
The resolution also highlights preventive measures, including mandatory rehydration, to reduce health risks linked to heat exposure.
Personnel, especially those from the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM) and other field units, are encouraged to drink water regularly.
Seno said continuity of public service remains a priority, with replacement personnel expected to take over when workers go on break.
The city’s Human Resource and Management Office, in coordination with the City Administrator’s Office and department heads, has been tasked to draft the implementing guidelines.
Meanwhile, the Mandaue City Health Office urged residents to take precautions as heat levels rise.
Assistant City Health Officer Phyllis Bidon advised the public to avoid outdoor activities during peak hours, stay hydrated even without feeling thirsty, and wear protective clothing when going outside.
She warned that dehydration can occur quickly and may lead to headaches, fainting, and more serious conditions, adding that increased intake of water and fruits, along with reduced consumption of sugary and salty food, can help lower risks.
Bidon also noted that extreme heat may trigger skin problems and other illnesses, urging those who experience symptoms to seek medical attention promptly. (VCL)
