Dozens of Birds Skim Water Surface in Opon Channel as Plastic Waste Persists Under CCLEX in Cebu City

CEBU CITY — Dozens of seabirds were seen skimming the water’s surface in the Opon Channel beneath the Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) on April 27, 2026, highlighting ongoing marine pollution as plastic waste continues to float across the waterway.

The activity was observed in the Opon Channel, where a flock of birds repeatedly dipped toward the water in search of food despite the presence of visible plastic debris. The moment was documented by Jacq Hernandez, a PBB photojournalist.

The sighting underscores persistent plastic pollution in coastal waters. Floating waste can harm marine ecosystems by disrupting feeding behavior and degrading natural habitats. Birds may ingest plastic materials, while smaller fragments—known as Microplastics—can enter the food chain, posing risks to wildlife and potentially to humans.

Environmental groups and local authorities have long identified improper waste disposal as a major issue affecting Cebu’s coastal areas. The proximity of major infrastructure such as CCLEX to marine environments highlights the need for coordinated waste management and regular shoreline cleanups.

Although no official statement accompanied the sighting, environmental advocates continue to call for stronger waste management systems, consistent cleanup efforts, and increased public awareness to curb plastic pollution. Community involvement remains a key factor in addressing the issue.

Residents are encouraged to reduce single-use plastics, dispose of waste responsibly, and participate in coastal and river cleanup initiatives. Supporting environmental policies aimed at reducing pollution can also help protect marine ecosystems.
