A push to strengthen disaster readiness and emergency coordination brought Swedish diplomats to the Cebu Provincial Capitol on April 29, as both sides discussed possible areas of cooperation ranging from crisis response to environmental management.
Officials from the Embassy of Sweden paid a courtesy visit to Cebu to better understand provincial government systems and explore support mechanisms for Swedish nationals in the Philippines, particularly during emergencies and natural disasters.
First Secretary Roya Ndure said the visit focused on building coordination in times of crisis and identifying possible areas for collaboration.
“We are in Cebu to understand how we can work together if a natural disaster happens,” Ndure said, adding that Sweden is also interested in initiatives involving waste segregation, energy use, and other priority needs of the province.
Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro presented the province’s disaster response approach, emphasizing immediate on-ground deployment of government personnel during emergencies to reassure affected communities.
She said the provincial government positions itself as the first line of support for local government units, providing additional resources when needed during disasters.
The governor also outlined long-term development priorities, including strengthening the province’s healthcare system as part of her administration’s agenda.
Swedish Honorary Consul in Cebu Karl Mogens Alexander Hey expressed support for a more coordinated and integrated disaster response system, aligning with the governor’s emphasis on structured preparedness.
Consular Officer Angela Tolentino also highlighted the importance of readiness in disaster management, noting that having a solid plan is essential for effective response.
The meeting underscored mutual interest in improving coordination mechanisms for emergencies, with both sides signaling openness to future cooperation in disaster preparedness and related governance initiatives.
