A green verification badge now separates human-made music from AI-generated tracks on Spotify as the platform moves to address a surge of synthetic content across streaming services.
Spotify has launched “Verified by Spotify,” a system that confirms whether an artist is human and adds a visible badge to their profile.
The company said it aims to improve transparency for listeners.
“In the AI era, it’s more important than ever to be able to trust the authenticity of the music you listen to,” the company said. “At Spotify, our focus is providing you with more context about artists and their music, so you can build more meaningful connections with them.”
The badge is awarded to artists with verified identity signals, including real-world activity such as concerts, merchandise, and linked social media accounts.
To help spot AI slop, Spotify also said it will “look for an identifiable artist presence both on and off-platform, like concert dates, merch and linked social accounts on their artist profile.”
Profiles adjudged to represent AI-generated or “AI-persona” artists will not receive a verified badge, the company also noted.
Spotify confirmed that AI-generated or “AI-persona” artists are not eligible for verification at launch. It also said verification will roll out gradually, with some eligible artists receiving the badge later.
“Not seeing the badge on an artist profile doesn’t mean they won’t receive it in the future,” the company said.
The platform also introduced an “Artist Activity” feature that shows release history, touring data, and career milestones, acting as a transparency tool for listeners.
At launch, Spotify guarantees that over 99% of frequently searched artists will be covered under the new system, including independent musicians worldwide.
The rollout comes as AI-generated tracks increasingly flood streaming platforms, with Spotify saying about 75,000 AI songs are uploaded daily.
