Workers, students, and labor groups in Cebu City gathered in a unified mobilization on Friday, May 1, to commemorate the 124th Labor Day, amplifying calls for higher wages, job security, and urgent economic reforms.
The demonstration, held in the city’s downtown area, brought together various sectors advocating for improved labor conditions amid rising living costs. Participants highlighted concerns over insufficient wages, contractualization, and limited social protection, urging both government and private institutions to implement policies that ensure fair compensation and stable employment.
Organizers emphasized that the annual observance of Labor Day serves not only as a commemoration of workers’ contributions but also as a platform to press for meaningful reforms. They stressed the need for immediate action to address economic challenges faced by Filipino workers, particularly in urban centers where the cost of living continues to increase.
The mobilization remained generally orderly, with participants carrying placards and delivering speeches that reflected the collective sentiment of the labor sector.
