A Facebook post by Vincent Alcain Linao has gone viral after featuring a child from South Cotabato born with 24 digits—six on each hand and foot instead of the usual five, drawing widespread attention online.

In his post, Linao wrote, “Ka buyag sa bata, 24 tanan tudlo????,” prompting mixed reactions from netizens. Some described the child as “swerte,” while others suggested the condition may be inherited. Medically, this condition is known as Polydactyly, a rare but recognized congenital trait where a person is born with extra fingers or toes. It can occur due to genetic factors or developmental variations during pregnancy.

Medical experts note that polydactyly is not uncommon worldwide and can range from small, non-functional extra digits to fully developed fingers or toes. Similar cases have been reported in various parts of the Philippines and abroad, where individuals live normal, healthy lives, with some opting for surgical removal depending on medical advice and personal preference.

While the viral post has sparked curiosity and varied opinions, health professionals emphasize the importance of understanding the condition from a scientific perspective and avoiding stigma. Each case is unique, and proper medical evaluation is essential to determine if any intervention is needed.
